Even today in many parts of India, the birth of a girl child is not celebrated as that of a boy. But a woman in Uttar Pradesh may just be the gamechanger. Prema Devi, who belongs to Hamirpur district, gifted her daughter-in-law a Honda City car after she gave birth to a baby girl.
Devi, a retired Health Department inspector, threw a small party in the honour of the newborn and the daughter-in-law. And at the party, she declared that on the occasion of Diwali, she will gift her a brand new Honda City car.
The generous mother-in-law opines that daughters are better than sons. “The practice of female infanticide can only end when daughters-in-law are treated as daughters. After all, they're somebody else's daughters as well,” said Devi, in a report by India Today.
"If daughters-in-law are loved the way daughters are loved, they bring happiness to the home."
Devi’s son is a government officer in Hamirpur district headquarters and her daughter-in-law Khushbu is a housewife. Khushbu believes that daughters-in-law should also treat their mothers-in-law like their own mothers and feels blessed to have Devi.
Devi's love for her daughter-in-law is heartening in the face of atrocities against women in Indian society, especially Uttar Pradesh which is infamous for gender bias. We need more women like Devi in the older generation who can show the right way to the young women.
