Singer Taylor Muhl is her own twin, given that she has a genetic disorder called chimerism. The condition is when fraternal twins fuse together while in utero, and is so rare that only 100 cases have been recorded worldwide.
Rare condition
She has a distance line of pigmentation which divides her torso in half. She used to always suffer from illnesses as a child. But it wasn’t till her twenties that doctors discovered that she is her own twin.
Her health issues happen because of the two genetically different immune system attacking one another. She tries to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle to control her problems, but they still persist.
“Even with doing all of that, though, I still endure autoimmune problems and food sensitivities daily,” Muhl told Yahoo, “so emotionally it can get frustrating”.
She is now a body positivity activist
Muhl is now an advocate for Human Chimera awareness and body positivity. “I hope by showing my own imperfections, I can inspire others who have physical abnormalities or who are different, to never let that stop them from pursuing their dreams,” she says.
“I felt it was important to show my entire physical demarcation because in the entertainment business, there’s an overwhelming amount of pressure to appear physically perfect or within a certain physical stereotype,” she wrote on Instagram
Discovering her condition
The model has two immune systems and two blood streams. Everything on the left side of her body is larger. She is also rare because most people who are chimeras have very small marks. She had kept her condition a secret but now wants to embrace it.
Surprisingly, she was always obsessed by twins when she was growing up. She would ask her mother if she was a twin and wanted to play twins with her friends. She discovered her condition when she saw a documentary on Chimerism in 2009.
