A 27-year-old woman died due to severe blood loss after delivery at her home in Puliampatty, Krishnagiri district, in the early hours of August 22.
After learning from neighbours that her 30-year-old husband watched home birth videos YouTube, police took him into custody for questioning. The infant was taken to the Pochampalli government hospital to receive medical attention.
Woman Dies During Home Birth
The deceased woman has been identified as M. Loganayaki, a homemaker. Pochampalli Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Manoharan said that they learned about the death after the medical officer of the primary health centre at Perugobanapalli, M. Rathika, filed a complaint with Pochampalli police inspector M Prabhavathi on August 22.
According to the complaint, Loganayaki was brought dead after her husband Madesh attempted home birth while she was in labour. The DSP stated that the umbilical cord wasn’t cut off after the delivery, and Loganayaki lost consciousness due to severe blood loss.
Madesh immediately rushed her to the nearby public health centre for treatment, along with the just-born baby boy. Upon arrival, the doctor confirmed that she was brought dead.
The police have now registered a case under Section 174 (unnatural death) of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) and detained Madhesh for questioning.
The DSP stated that police will arrest Madesh if the charges levelled against him are confirmed.
