A police constable posted with the Vallikunnam police station in Kerala’s Alappuzha district, Saumya Pushpakaran was stabbed and set ablaze allegedly on Saturday evening by a fellow police officer because she rejected his marriage proposal. Pushpakaran was returning from her duty when she was attacked. She reportedly died on the spot after she was hacked. Then the assailant poured petrol on her and set her on fire.
The victims's family has accused a male police officer and Saumya’s colleague, Ajaz of murdering her because she had repeatedly rejected his marriage proposals. Police said that Saumya and Ajaz had known each other for years.
The 34-year-old constable, Pushpakaran was living in Vallikunnam with her three children. “Her eldest child is just studying in Class 3. Her husband is working abroad,” a police official at the Vallikunnam police station and a colleague of Soumya told The News Minute.
“Ajaz held a grudge towards my daughter after she rejected his marriage proposal. Soumya had taken Rs 1.50 lakh from Ajaz and when she wanted to return the amount, Ajaz refused to take it back. She had credited the sum to his bank account, but he returned it. He wanted to marry my daughter. When she rejected the proposal, Ajaz threatened to kill her husband and children. He came to Soumya’s house twice with the proposal. On one occasion, he even thrashed her with shoes,’’ said Indira, Saumya’s mother, The Indian Express reported.
Saumya’s eldest son Hrishikesh who is 12 years old, told media that he was aware of Ajaz, a police officer of Aluva traffic station, threatening his mother. “Two weeks back, mother had told me that if anything happened to her, Ajaz would be responsible. He used to repeatedly harass her over the phone,” said Hrishikesh.
Police have said that Ajaz has also been injured while burning the victim. “He has also incurred burn injuries and is being treated at the Alappuzha Medical College,” said the official.

But they also said that they aren’t fully aware of the motive behind the murder as Ajaz is still unconscious.
Ajaz and Soumya were friends for three years. The friendship turned bitter when Soumya realized that it would affect her family life. Ajaz wanted her to marry him, and to leave her husband and children, which Soumya rejected. She then stopped answering his calls and she blocked him on Whatsapp as well. This made Ajaz agitated
“Ajaz and Soumya were friends for three years. The friendship turned bitter when Soumya realized that it would affect her family life. Ajaz wanted her to marry him, and to leave her husband and children, which Soumya rejected. She then stopped answering his calls and she blocked him on Whatsapp as well. This made Ajaz agitated,” Sub Inspector Shaiju Ibrahim of Vallikunnam police station who is the investigating officer in the case told TNM.
The investigating officer alleges that the crime was pre-planned. “His intention was to kill himself as well. He first poured petrol on himself after which he stabbed her, poured petrol on Soumya and set her on fire. He sustained forty percent burns,” said Shaiju Ibrahim.
Alappuzha SP K M Tomy said, “We are looking into the relationship between the victim and the accused and what led to the murder,” he said.
While Saumya’s family alleges that she had complained against the harassment and Ajaz’s behavior to the police, they have said that no such complaint is in notice at the Vallikunnam police station.
