Garbine Muguruza defeated Venus  7-5, 6-0 to clinch the 2017 Wimbledon women's singles championship, the second major title of her career.

Venus Williams was hoping to secure her sixth Wimbledon title as she battled it out in the final of the tournament. The veteran tennis player was gracious in defeat and was quick to praise  the newest Wimbledon champion.

The Spaniard won her second Grand Slam singles title after her French Open triumph over Serena Williams in 2016.

"I had I think the hardest match today against Venus," Muguruza said.

"She is such an incredible player, I grew up watching her play. It is incredible to play her in the final. She was definitely an inspiration and it's incredible to play her here," she added.

The 37-year-old American Williams said, "Congratulations Garbine, amazing," after losing the much-needed match to her.

"I know how hard you work and I'm sure this means so much to you and your family. Well done today, beautiful," she added.

Williams last lifted the Wimbledon trophy in 2008.

On the other hand, Muguruza was through to the final for the second time in three years. She lost in 2015 to Serena Williams.

Today, Muguruza took home £2.2 million in prize money while Williams won £1.1 million.
