Who Was Padma Sachdev? Noted author and Padma Shri awardee Padma Sachdev passed away at a Mumbai hospital on Wednesday August 4. She was hospitalised after developing some health complications the day before. Sachdev was 81 years old.

In her lifetime, the author wrote many books in Dogri and Hindi. Arvinder Singh Aman, Additional Secretary of Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages said that Sachdev will be remembered for her role in the struggle to get Dogri added to the English Schedule of the Indian Constitution.

  1. Padma Sachdev was a renowned poet and novelist who mainly wrote in Dogri and Hindi. She was the first modern female poet of Dogri language. Born in Purmandal, Jammu, Sachdev started working as an announcer at the All India Radio there in 1961. After marrying singer Surinder Singh, she moved to Mumbai and worked at the All India Radio, Mumbai thereafter.
  2. Some of the writer's notable works are Meri Kavita Mere Geet, Tavi Te Chanhan, Uttar Vahini, Pota Pota Nimbal and Tainthian.
  3. Padma Sachdev wrote the lyrics of the song Mera Chhota Sa Ghar Baar for the 1973 film Prem Parbat. She then wrote the lyrics for films like Aankhin Dekhi and Saahas. She gained much more popularity with her entry in the world of cinema.
  4. The author cum poet won several awards and accolades. In 1971, her collection of poetry Meri Kaveeta Mere Geet won her the Sahitya Akademi Award. She was honoured with the Padma Shri Award in 2001. In 2015, Sachdev won the Saraswati Samman for Chitt-Chete, her autobiography in Dogri language. The same year, Bharatiya Bhasha Parishad, West Bengal gave her the Kruritva Smagra Samman. She was felicitated with the Dinu Bhai Pant Life Time Achievement Award in 2017.
  5. Remembering the late poet, Arvinder Singh Aman said that her contribution to Dogri language is exemplary. He added that she was a living example of Dogri culture.
