Subramaniam, the first woman Chief Secretary of Gujarat, passed away at the age of 74, due to health complications in a hospital at Vandora. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel expressed their condolences.
Who Was Manjula Subramaniam?
- The first woman chief secretary of Gujarat, Manjula Subramaniam, passed away due to health complications on Sunday at a hospital in Vadodara.
- Subramaniam held the office of Chief Secretary between September 1, 2007 and September 30, 2008. She served as the Chief Secretary of Gujarat during Narendra Modi's tenure as the state's Chief Minister.
- She was a Gujarat Cadre officer of the 1972 batch.
- She has also served as the Chief Vigilance Commissioner and Principal Secretary of the Energy and Petrochemicals Department. She was also the chairperson and director of many state public sector units. She was also appointed as an Additional Director to the Board of Directors of Gujarat Gas Limited in August 2020 for a five-year term.
- Subramaniam resigned a couple of weeks ago on health grounds from the Gujarat Industries Power Company Limited (GIPCL).
- The additional chief secretary of general administration, AK Rajesh, said that she had been facing health complications for a while and was hospitalised for about a week before her demise.
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Chief Minister of Gujarat, Bhupendra Patel, expressed their condolences over her death.
- "Anguished by the demise of veteran bureaucrat Dr. Manjula Subramaniam Ji... Condolences to her family and friends," Modi said in a tweet.
- "Condolences on the passing away of the first woman Chief Secretary of Gujarat, Dr. Manjula Subramaniam ji. Her contribution to the development journey of the state is commendable. I pray that God rests her soul in peace and gives strength to his relatives to bear this sorrow," Patel tweeted.
