EY India Chairman Responds to Anna Sebastian Perayil’s Death

In response to the tragic death of Anna Sebastian Perayil, EY India Chairman Rajiv Memani addressed the concerns raised by Anna’s family and the subsequent investigation. Memani highlighted that the company employs around 100,000 people and emphasized that all employees are expected to work hard.

He stated, “We have around one lakh employees. There is no doubt each one has to work hard. Anna worked with us only for four months. She was allotted work like any other employee. We don’t believe that work pressure could have claimed her life.”

The company assured that they are taking the family's correspondence seriously and emphasised their commitment to employee well-being. They added, “We place the highest importance on the well-being of all employees and will continue to find ways to improve and provide a healthy workplace for our 100,000 people across EY member firms in India.”

Father Claims Work Stress Led to Anna's Death Amid Denials from EY and Memani

Despite EY and Memani denying these allegations, her father, Siby Joseph, spoke to local media about the "glorification" of overwork, expressing his desire to prevent others from experiencing the same fate as his daughter.

Joseph revealed that Anna frequently worked late into the night, often until 12:30 a.m. He stated, "We advised her to quit, but she insisted this role would offer valuable professional exposure." Despite her struggles, Anna reportedly communicated her "extreme work pressure" to senior officials, but no action was taken.

"She complained to the assistant manager, yet they insisted on working even at night," her father recounted. The family also expressed disappointment over the company's lack of outreach following Anna's death, only receiving communication after her mother's letter to Memani gained attention online.

While the family is not considering legal action, Joseph emphasised their commitment to ensuring that future employees do not endure similar experiences. "We want to protect new hires from facing such situations in corporate environments," he concluded.
