Who Is VJ Chitra? The Tamil TV Actress Who Died By Suicide

Tamil actress Chitra Kamaraj was found hanging at a five-star hotel in Nazarethpettai on December 9. VJ Chitra's death by suicide came as a shock to the entertainment industry and the audience. She was a television presenter and actress best known for playing the role of Mullai in the popular Tamil television show Pandian Store. An active user of social media, she regularly updated her fans about her life. VJ Chitra also posted stories and photos hours before her death.

Here are 10 things to know about VJ Chitra’s death:

1.VJ Chitra was 28 years old. She was an anchor and television actress. Some of her popular shows are Chinna Papa Periya Papa, Velunachi, Dance Jodi Dance and Pandian Store.

2. According to reports, she was last seen shooting for a reality show at EVP film city and had returned to her hotel room at around 2:30am.

3. Her body was allegedly found hanging by her fiancé Hemanth, a businessman, to whom she got engaged a few months back. A report by The News Minute, however, claims that VJ Chitra and Hemanth had a registered marriage two months ago.

4. Hemanth has claimed that Chitra told him she was going for a bath soon after returning from the shoot. However, apparently she didn't come out for a long time, nor did she respond when he knocked at the door. Hemanth then called the hotel staff and when they opened the door with a duplicate key, she was reportedly found hanging from the ceiling fan.

5. VJ Chitra was allegedly battling depression. Earlier this year, late actor Sushant Singh Rajput also reportedly died by suicide after his battle with depression. Read more about it here.

6. A few hours ago, she reposted a story of the television personality, Sharanya Turadi where both of them were shooting for a show. They were smiling and joking to one another.

7. Later, Sharanya Turandi expressed her shock and despair on Instagram. She wrote, "Shocked Beyond Words. Why? @chithuvj?"

8. She uploaded her last Instagram post 16 hours ago.

9. The family of the actress has not released any official statement as of yet. However, Vijay TV channel, where her popular show Pandian store aired, has sent out their statement. "It is with great shock and sadness that we received the tragic news of the unexpected and untimely demise of Ms Chitra Kamaraj. She was a wonderful person, having captured the hearts of millions of viewers by playing the most-loved “Mullai” in Pandian Stores. On behalf of the channel and the 'Pandian Stores' family, we express our deepest condolences to the bereaved family and friends."

10. Since Chitra passed away within seven years of her marriage, district revenue officials will be looking into the case, reports TNM. The deceased actor's father has filed a complaint at Nazarathpet Police station, requesting a fair probe in her death. He is a retired policeman himself.
