Social activist and the Chairperson of the Delhi Commission for Women, Swati Maliwal wrote letters to the Information and Broadcasting Ministry of India regarding the participation of MeToo-accused filmmaker Sajid Khan in Bigg Boss 16. She claims that for her stand against the filmmaker, she is receiving death and rape threats online.
Filmmaker Sajid Khan's participation in Bigg Boss 16 came as a shock to many people including the activists that are fighting hard for the rights of women and the actors and models who were abused by the filmmaker. All of them raised their voices against the step as it sent out the wrong message to the public and the Chairperson of the Delhi Commission for Women was one of them. She recently shared screenshots of her Instagram DM's on social media in which she claims that people online are threatening to kill and rape her for speaking against Sajid Khan. Who Is Swati Maliwal?
Swati Maliwal was born on October 15, 1984, in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh. Maliwal is an Amity International School alumni and an Information Technology graduate from JSS Academy of Technical Education, Noida. Maliwal left her job at an MNC to contribute her bit to society and joined the NGO Parivartan. She later became an active member of Anna Hazare and Arvind Kejriwal's anti-corruption movement. When Arvind Kejriwal's Aam Aadmi Party succeeded in forming a government in Delhi in 2015, Maliwal was appointed as the Chairperson of the Delhi Commission for Women.
Maliwal was the youngest person to hold the position and went on to continue leading DCW till 2018. In July 2018, her tenure was extended for another three years. In the same year, she went on a 10-day hunger strike in April demanding several facilities for women including the death penalty for rapists of girls under 12 years of age. She was married to AAP leader Naveen Jaihind but the couple divorced in February 2020. She currently heads DCW and was recently one of the prominent people who spoke against Sajid Khan's participation in Bigg Boss.
In her open letter to the Information and Broadcasting Ministry, Maliwal wrote about the intentions of the show makers to whitewash the image of the sexual abuse accused filmmaker. In a recent Tweet, Maliwal reported the incident of online threats to Delhi police and asked them to register an FIR and arrest the people behind it. Following that Maliwal shared screenshots of receiving rape threats from strangers on social media.
