Subrata Roy, the founder of Sahara India Group, passed away on Tuesday due to cardiorespiratory arrest, said the business group in a statement. He was 75 years old. The conglomerate group operates vast businesses from finance, housing and infrastructure, real estate, sports, media entertainment, health, offline and online education and much more

Subrata Roy at the age of 75 passed away on November 14 from cardiorespiratory arrest after being admitted to Mumbai's Kokilaben Hospital on November 12. He died following an extended battle with complications arising from metastatic malignancy, hypertension and diabetes. Roy is survived by his wife Swapna Roy and two sons Sushanto Roy and Seemanto Roy.

Subrata Roy founded a multi-billion dollar enterprise with an empire spread over major business sectors and was one of the pioneer entrepreneurs of India. Roy founded the Sahara Group with his wife Swapna Roy in 1978 and since then his wife, Swapna Roy has been seen standing by his side through thick and thin. 

Swapna Roy is co-founder of the Sahara India Pariwar, a diversified Indian business conglomerate and a board member of Sahara One Media and Entertainment and was known to handle its media and entertainment sector profoundly and the couple were often spotted attending Bollywood parties and big-shot business events having friends in the industry. 

Years ago, Swapna Roy and Subrata Roy also featured in a SaReGaMa-produced romantic music video that depicted the love life story of the founders of India's largest business conglomerate which was reportedly sung by Swapna Roy. 

She is a low-profile figure and publicly available information is scarce about her. However, she is known to be a philanthropist and has been involved in various charitable activities. 

The lesser-known fact about Subrata Roy's family is, that his wife Swapna Roy along with their two sons has been given citizenship of Macedonia, a southeastern country in Europe to escape Indian Law. 

Macedonia which was part of Yugoslavia became independent in 1991 and became part of the United Nations in 1993. Macedonia offers citizenship to people who declare an investment of €4 Lakh and employ 10 local people. Macedonia also offers the right to stay in the country for a year to foreigners who invest more than €40,000 in real estate. Macedonia reportedly took these steps to reduce the unemployment rate in the country which is evidently high. 

Subrata Roy who reportedly had good relations in Macedonia and proposed welfare ideas to the country managed to get his family citizenship of Macedonia after Sahara Group was muddled in legal battles in 2010 regarding the Ponzi scheme which is now known as The Sahara Group Chit Scam. 

Swapna Roy has been a pillar of support for her husband throughout his career. She has been by his side during challenging times, including when he was arrested in 2014 on charges of financial irregularities and spent a brief period in Tihar Jail.
