Shilpa Singh, an assistant professor at a law college in Goa, was booked for a recent Facebook post that allegedly “hurt” religious sentiments on Monday. Rajiv Jha, a resident of South Goa’s Ponda, has filed a fresh complaint in Goa Police’s cyber cell alleging that Singh had mocked Hindu religion and its practices by comparing “mangalsutra” to a “chained dog”. Here are ten things you must know about Shilpa Singh:

1. Shilpa Singh secured a master’s degree in political science from Goa University in 2010. She also obtained the first rank and was felicitated with an award for securing highest marks during her post-graduation.

2. She cleared the All India UGC NET examination in political science in her first attempt itself. Furthermore, in 2013, she also cleared the UGC JRF in political science examination, securing the highest percentage marks all over India.

3. Currently, she is teaching political science at Panaji’s VM Salgaocar College of Law. The college had refused to take any actions against her when ABVP members alleged that she “promotes socially hateful thoughts about a particular religion, community and group of people."

4. As per the college’s official website, Singh has a keen interest in academic areas like political theory, political economy, international politics, and gender studies. She has also conducted extensive research in these areas.

5. The website also mentions that she has five publications to her credit - three in research journals and two book chapters.

6. Shilpa Singh has presented over 18 research papers at various international, national and state-level seminars.

7. Singh has also assumed various leadership positions during her career. She has worked as a mentor for political science and international studies for net mentoring classes of Directorate of Higher Education, Goa Government. She served as the co-coordinator of Election Commission of India’s “Knowledge, Attitude, Behavior, Belief and Practices (KABP) Survey” which sought to ascertain voters’ awareness and turnout for Goa Assembly Elections 2017. The project was backed by the Department of Political Science, Goa University.

8. Additionally, she has served as the co-coordinator of ‘Human Rights Awareness and Sensitization Programme for the Youth’, a one-day programme organised in January 2014 at Goa Science Centre, Miramar by Dhempe College of Arts and Science in collaboration with National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).

9. Shilpa Singh has admitted that she has been curious about analysing and understanding symbols, especially those related to women and marriage, in various cultures since childhood.

10. As per her admission, she was trolled by right-wingers for one of her social media posts in 2018, too.
