  • Shahana K Hanif was born on February 5 in 1991. She was raised in Kensington, Brooklyn. Her parents were immigrants from Bangladesh.
  • She graduated from Bishop Kearney High School. Post that, she went on to receive her B.A. from Brooklyn College.
  • She was 17 years old when she was diagnosed with an incurable and fatal autoimmune disease called lupus.
  • Shahana Hanif has been working hard to improve housing, supporting the arts, and fighting for a better criminal justice system.
  • She is advocating for a health care system that actually works for those who need it and for disability rights as she lives with Lupus.
  • She is also aiming to protect survivors of domestic violence.
  • New York Times profiled her after she helped a young Bangladeshi woman escape from the clutches of an abusive forced marriage to safety
  • In an interview, she said that she wants to work towards the upliftment of communities that have been voiceless. She plans to achieve this through elected representation.
  • “Muslims live everywhere. In our city, we are a growing faith community and have a ton of needs. And so connecting with leaders across the city and making sure that the Muslim voice is present in in City Hall, alongside the needs of South Asians.”, she said adding that working towards justice and dismantling deeply rooted capitalist patriarchal society doesn’t happen overnight and takes time. “This is my life’s work.”, she said.
