Sandra Mason was elected as the first President of Barbados when it became a republic earlier this year and removed itself from the British Crown's rule. Mason, who is the governor-general of the country, is going to take oath on November 30, 2021. The day marks the 55th anniversary of Barbados' independence from Britain.
Mason had announced the Barbados' historic milestone in September last year. She had said, "the time has come to fully leave out colonial past behind." With the population of about 285,000, Barbados is one of the most prosporous and populous Caribbean Islands. The senate and House of Assembly in the nation held a joint session and called for votes.
Mia Mottley, the Prime Minister of the country, called the vote a 'seminal moment' in the history of the nation. Trinidad, Tobago and Guyana are the Caribbean Islands who have already gain independence from Britain.
"Having attained Independence over half a century ago, our country can be in no doubt about its capacity for self-governance," Mason said.

- Mason had secured two-thirds of the votes in the country's two Parliament houses.
- She had started her career as a teacher at the Princess Margaret Secondary School in the country.
- After that, she started working as a clerk at the Barclays Bank DCO in Barbados and soon got promoted as the Trust Administrator of the bank.
- Mason took the post of the Magistrate of the Juvenile and Family Court in 1978 and also got associated with the Family at the University of West Indies.

In 1983, she stopped teaching and continued as the magistrate till 1992. She became the first woman to serve on the Barbados Court of Appeals as the Appeals Judge.

In 2014, she was appointed as a member of the Commonwealth Secretariat Arbitral Tribunal which is based in London, England.

Mason, on the recommendation of the Queen of England, became the eighth Governor-General of Barbados in 2018.
