S Jothimani, the Member of Parliament from Karur district of Tamil Nadu has been protesting for two days now at the district collector's office. She is demanding that collector allow her to have special camps to selected beneficiaries who can gain from assistive devices supplied by the Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation ( ALIMCO) for persons with disabilities.
The MP of Congress party posted on Twitter on November 25 that she would move a privilege motion in Parliament for not allowing an elected MP like from carrying out her duties. She said that she had sought approval from the Central government to conduct the ALIMCO camps.
She asked if the collectors of Tiruchirapalli, Dindigul and Pudukkottai conducted such camps then why did the Karur collector do that same. Jothimani also shared a letter written by District Collector T Prabhu Shankar in reply to her request for the camps. The collector said that there was no delay as the MP had alleged and they were not able to conduct the camps earlier due to COVID-19 restrictions and after that the mega vaccination camps took over.
He added that, if required, steps would be taken to conduct ALIMCO special camps as per the MP’s request. Jothimani in her tweet of Thursday wrote, "I have personally visited 6300 out of 6800 village (sic) in my constituency. I was shocked by thousands of differently abled people who have sought our assistance. Will I ask for a camp if there was no need? On what basis is the collector not conducting the camps?." She alleged that the district collector is corrupt and hoped for the central government to side with her. She stated that she will not leave the protest site until the district administration declares the dates on which ALIMCO camps would be conducted.
