Who is Reverend Saju: The Kerala-born priest Right Reverend Malayil Lukose Varghese Muthalaly, also known as Saju became the youngest Bishop of England at 42 by the Archbishop of Canterbury on Tuesday, January 25. The bishop also enjoys running and has completed several marathons.

The Right Reverend Malayil Lukose Varghese Muthalaly, also called Saju, became England’s youngest bishop at the age of 42. He was consecrated as the bishop during a eucharist service at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London by the Archbishop of Canterbury on Tuesday, January 25.

Zipp and Abraham, two of his four children also joined him at the service. The service marked the feast day of conversion of St. Paul. Dr Selena Stone, lecturer in theology at St. Mellitus College, gave an insightful sermon at the service.

Reverend Saju will be formally acclaimed as Bishop of Loughborough on February, 5 after a welcome service including representatives of diocese at Brockington Church of England Academy in Enderby, Leicestershire.

Who is Reverend Saju?

Born in Kerala, Reverend Saju is the youngest priest to become a Bishop in England at the age of 42. He spent first half of his life in India. While spending the last 21 years in England, he fell in love with Katy, who is now his wife.

The Right Reverend Malayil Lukose Varghese Muthalaly grew up in a leprosy hospital in Bangalore where his mother worked as a nurse. He completed his education at Southern Asia Bible College, Bangalore and trained for ministry at Wycliffe Hall, Oxford. Reverend Saju has also spoken about his interests including reading and reflecting. He also enjoys playing cricket with his four children and running. Saju has also completed several marathons.

He was ordained Priest in the Church of England in 2009. Queen Elizabeth II approved his appointment as a Bishop in the Church of England in November 2021. Earlier, Reverend Saju had also served his title at St. Thomas’ in the diocese of Blackburn.

Reverend Saju was ordained as the Bishop of Loughborough with a staff made of Indian rosewood.
