Who is Princess Mako: Japan went into a frenzy when, four years ago, reports surfaced of an unusual union between a royal and what the royals call a commoner. Fast forward to 2021, Princess Mako and her partner, a former classmate, Kei Komuro have announced they will finally tie the knot later this month on October 26.

The wedding will see the princess officially give up her title for love and the newlyweds will reportedly move to the United States where Komuro works as a lawyer. The princess has reportedly even declined a payout, offered to royals marrying outside the family, worth $1.2 million and will also forgo many royal wedding rituals.

Given the circumstances of the wedding, it has already kicked up a storm of sensationalism in the country surrounded by high anticipation among the media and citizens. For the similarity in their timelines and relationships, Princess Mako and Komuro are famously called the 'Prince Harry and Meghan' of Japan.

The final official date for the 29-year-olds' wedding comes after multiple snags and delays in their journey.

Born to Prince Fumihito and Princess Kiko as their eldest daughter, Princess Mako completed her education from institutions in Japan, England and Scotland. She was formally recognised as an adult member of the royal family in 2011. For years now, she has held status as a youth icon in Japan.

Instances of Princess Mako involving herself up close in social matters of her country - such as with volunteer programs for the disadvantaged and advocacy for deaf people - have earned her the goodwill of her people.

She studied together with Komuro at the International Christian University in Japan. In 2017, it was reported the two would marry a year later. However, a financial dispute in the Komuro household stopped the wedding bells from ringing. According to the BBCthe issue was linked to Komuro's mother allegedly not repaying a loan from her ex-fiance.

As Markle was by the British press, Komuro is hounded by tabloids in Japan that treat his life and relationship with Princess Mako as nothing less than a scandal. 

Reports of Princess Mako's mental health suffering owing to how her relationship with Komuro is received by the press have previously done rounds. Local media quoting Japan's Imperial Household Agency claim she faces post-traumatic stress disorder.
