Noori Khan, Indian National Congress (INC) leader, was reportedly arrested Monday in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh when she was en route to meet state health minister Dr Prabhuram Choudhary. Khan has, on multiple occasions in recent times, raised objections to the health leadership and been critical of the lack of facility in the area.
On May 17, she attempted to meet Choudhary reportedly with a memorandum outlining her concerns and a rose. The health minister was visiting Ujjain and was at Brihaspati Bhawan along with other senior ministers of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Reports say Khan, who was "forcibly" trying to make her way into the Bhawan, was stopped by security deployed outside. Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) that prevents 'unlawful assembly' of four or more individuals and Section 151 that prevents persons from joining an assembly of five or more to disrupt peace were invoked.
Khan was presented before the Sub-Divisional Magistrate but she reportedly refused to seek bail. She was thereon sent to Central Jail Bhairavgarh.
About Noori Khan
Noori Khan is the National Coordinator for Mahila Congress and member of the Minorities Commission of the MP government. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she has been a vocal critic of the state government's handling in Ujjain. She was arrested previously in April 2021 as well, and claimed she had only "informed the hospital administration about negligence with the covid infected people and at the moment was distributing oxygen cylinders."
Her team, posting from her social media accounts, appealed to the public Monday to begin a #ReleaseNooriKhan trend in her support.
Congress leaders and supporters have, on social media, been demanding Khan's release. Mahila Congress, rallying behind her, wrote on Twitter, "Now she has been taken into custody by the BJP government for handing over the memorandum to the Health Minister of Madhya Pradesh. Is public service a crime?"
