Glendale police Sgt. Christian Hauptmann stated that “Per the family, it is common for Narineh to go hiking with groups and on solo trips — though lately, she has been going solo.” Avakian’s hiking groups were contacted by the Glendale police, missing person flyers were distributed, a missing person bulletin was posted on social media, and it was reported that she was driving a Subaru Impreza.

On March 11, around 3 PM, Avakian’s vehicle was found parked at the Buckhorn Day Use Area along the Angeles Crest Highway. The vehicle was relocated to the Glendale station for further processing. A search and rescue team was deployed from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. A group of volunteer personnel also joined the search and rescue efforts.
The search was suspended for several hours due to weather conditions, but resumed with more resources and is currently active according to Hauptmann. He also added that currently there is no suspicion of foul play. Members of the public were also discouraged from conducting independent search efforts.
