On January 6, the world watched in horror at the scenes unfolding in the United States at Capitol Hill. A day after the violent mob attack, US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi has called for the 25th Amendment of the Constitution to be invoked against Donald Trump, thereby removing him from the Presidency seat only days before he is scheduled to formally exit office. Pelosi, backed by other senior members of the US Congress, claims Trump's incitement to mob violence was the guiding force behind the Capitol siege that was led by his supporters.

Pelosi urged Vice President Mike Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment. It would remove Trump, thereby shifting the power to Pence and the Cabinet until President-elect Joe Biden is sworn in on January 20. If this route fails to be taken, Pelosi said the "Congress may be prepared to move forward with impeachment.” This would be Trump's second impeachment in the event Congress proceeds with it.

During a press conference in Washington DC, 80-year-old Pelosi said: “The president of the United States incited an armed insurrection against America. In calling for this seditious act, the president has committed an unspeakable assault on our nation and our people.” She went on to say, "President Trump is deadly to our democracy and to our people."

Nancy Pelosi, Other House of Rep Members Condemn Capitol Violence

The New York Times states that Democrats, as well as some members of Trump's own Republican side, in the Congress have given a unanimous nod to Trump's removal. However, Pelosi mentioned in her address that “accountability is also needed for Republicans in Congress who promoted the extreme conspiracy theories that provoked the violence.”

Shocking visuals from Wednesday's Capitol siege showed a rioter take over Pelosi's office and vandalise it, as the House floor was simultaneously being trespassed by pro-Trump mobs. Read more about the attack here.
