Who is Ligia Noronha: Antonio Guterres, the chief of United Nations, appointed Indian Economist Ligia Noronha as the head of the New York office of the United Nations Environment Programme(UNEP) and its Assistant Secretary-General.

Noronha will take over the role earlier taken up by Satya Tripathi, another development economist from India. Ligia is one of the many Indians who have been associated with the United Nations in the past.
Who Is Ligia Noronha?
- Ligia Noronha has worked as an economist for more than 30 years now. She has ample experience working with international organisations in the field of sustainable development.
- Before being appointed as the Assistant Secretary-General of UNEP, she was working as the Director of its Economy Division in Nairobi. She has lead UNEP's projects on energy transitions, sustainable consumption and production, climate mitigation and pollution and health, the official UNEP statement said.
- In India, she used to work as the Executive Director and Director of Division on Resources, Regulation and Global Security at The Energy and Resource Institute( TERI) in New Delhi.
- Noronha was also the Secretary of Asian Energy Institute and a Coordinator of Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Partnerships of South Asia. She has also worked in Canada with the International Development Research Centre.
- Her professional profile mentions many important profiles. Noronha was also a member of the Planning Board of the Government of Goa. She specialises in natural resources, minerals, metals and their impact on the environment.
- Ligia Noronha completed her graduation in Economics from the University of Mumbai and went on to get a Master's degree in Economics and Policy and Sea Use Law from the London School Of Economics. She also has a Doctorate degree from the London School of Economics.
