In a major reshuffle, the Uttar Pradesh government appointed new Police Commissioners. Inspector-General of Police, Lucknow range, Laxmi Singh became the first woman Police Commissioner of Uttar Pradesh and was given the charge of Noida.

Laxmi Singh will replace Alok Singh, who has been posted to the Director General of Police headquarters in Lucknow.

The Uttar Pradesh government issued a transfer and posted a list of 16 Indian Police Service (IPS) officers in the state.

The 48-year-old senior Indian Police Service officer passed the exam in 2000 and became the Deputy Inspector General of police (DIG) of Pradeshik Armed Constabulary in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh.

Singh was serving as the Inspector General of Police, Lucknow range.

Who Is Laxmi Singh?

  • IPS officer Laxmi Singh passed the examination in 2000 and is known for arresting several dacoits.
  • She will replace Alok Singh as the Police Commissioner of Uttar Pradesh. Singh will become the first woman to take the post.
  • Singh is the first female IPS topper (33rd rank overall) in the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) held exams.
  • According to official records, Singh was adjudged the best probationer at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy in Hyderabad.
  • During her training, she was awarded the Prime Minister's silver baton and the Home Minister's pistol.
  • Singh holds a Bachelor in Technology degree in Mechanical Engineering and had her first posting as senior superintendent of police in 2004.
  • Singh had previously taken the post of Additional Director General (ADG) of the police, Director General (DG) of the police, and the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the police.
  • She became the DIG of Pradeshik Armed Constabulary in 2014.
  • In 2019, she was promoted to the Inspector General of Police in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh.
  • Laxmi Singh is best known for leading the investigation into the Kanpur encounter, in which 8 police personnel were killed, including the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Devendra Mishra.
  • Singh has actively been involved in probes connected to crimes against women, including the probe into the poisoning of three Dalit girls.
