Who Was Heeraben Modi? Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Mother Passes Away

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was born on September 17, 1950, and turned 72 years old today. In the past, the Prime Minister has travelled to Gujarat on his birthday to seek his mother Heeraben Modi’s blessing.

Earlier this year on June 18, Heeraben Modi celebrated her 100th birthday. To mark the momentous occasion, her son Narendra Modi visited her at her residence in Gandhinagar, Gujarat. He also dedicated a blog to his mother and spoke about her sacrifices and how she “shaped” his life, personality, mind, and self-confidence.

Modi hails from Visnagar, Mehsana in Gujarat and currently resides in Gandhinagar. In a blog post written by her son, he narrated how she overcame poverty and deprivation and looked after her family.

Heeraben's health deteriorated and she was taken to the hospital in Ahmedabad. Prime Minister Modi flew to Gujarat from Delhi to meet his mother on December 28, 2022, and spent over an hour with her.

On December 30, Heeraben Modi passed away at the age 100.

Who Is Heeraben Modi?

• 100-year-old Heeraben Modi was the mother of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In 2014, he celebrated his first birthday after becoming the Prime Minister by visiting his mother in Gandhinagar.
• Modi was born in Visnagar in Mehsana in Gujarat, she lost her mother to the Spanish Flu pandemic at a young age. Her son wrote, “Her childhood was one of poverty and deprivation.”
• As the eldest child and the eldest daughter-in-law after marriage, she had to look after her family.
• According to the Prime Minister’s blog, he said his mother had only accompanied him publically twice.
• She made a public appearance with her son at a function in Ahmedabad when she applied tilak on his forehead after he returned from Srinagar.
• Modi made her second public appearance with her son after he first took oath as the Chief Minister of Gujarat in 2001.
• The oath-taking ceremony held two decades ago was the last public event Modi attended with her son.
• Narendra Modi visited his mother Heeraben on his birthday and took her blessings in 2014, 2016, and 2017.
• In 2016, Modi visited her son at his official Race Course Road (RCR) residence. The occasion marked her first visit to RCR since the Prime Minister started living there nearly two years before.
• In a blog post, Narendra Modi spoke about Heeraben Modi and his relationship with her. He wished her a happy birthday and wrote, “In my Mother’s life story, I see the penance, sacrifice, and contribution of India’s matrushakti (mother’s power)”.
