Who Is Anarkali Kaur Honaryar? First Afghan Female Sikh MP Evacuated To India

Anarkali Kaur Honaryar, the first non-Muslim member of the Afghan National Assembly expressed concerns over the developing situation in her country and urged the international community to act. The Taliban captured Afghanistan on August 15.

Having rescued from Afghanistan on August 22, the Sikh MP of Afghanistan voiced the crisis in her country. She is currently sheltered in Delhi.

Speaking to Principal Diplomatic Correspondent Sidhant Sibal, Kaur said, "The world is silent, why? Are the people of Afghanistan not human, aren't they supposed to be safe? Every 15 years or so, or 20 years, we become a refugee, why Afghans built their homes, only to be destroyed?"

Who is Anarkali Kaur Honaryar?

Also a doctor by profession, Kaur is the first non-Muslim member of the Afghan National Assembly.

Kaur is also a member of the Afghan Independent human rights commission, appointed in the year 2006. She also holds the credit of being awarded the UNESCO-Madanjeet Singh Prize for the Promotion of Tolerance and Non-Violence.

Later in 2009, she was also chosen by Radio Free Europe's Afghan chapter as a person of the year.

When asked about the situation of women in an interview, Kaur accused the International communities of not taking appropriate actions in time. When the concerned parties alarmed the communities about the threat the Taliban might bring, "No one listened. They all said the Taliban has changed, don't worry. Now everyone is saying the Taliban never changed."

Currently taking shelter in Delhi, Kaur told the media, "I love my country, I studied there, I worked there. It is our right to save the country, but we have nothing in our hands."

"I had to save my life so that I can do something for my country, from outside the country."
