Valencia is a city that attracts many female visitors, both in groups and individuals. Maybe it’s because of its privileged setting by the Mediterranean sea, its long sandy beaches and stylish marina. The warmth from the sun and, above all, from its people, makes you feel welcome and safe from the moment you arrive.
Despite being Spain’s third largest city, it is not an intimidating destination, and its historic centre can easily be explored on foot. You can enjoy a drink with friends and watch the world go by from the terraces of its palm-fringed squares. And then there is the excellent shopping, the boutique hotels, the luxurious spa treatments… what’s a girl not to like?
If it is retail therapy you are after, you can choose from department stores like El Corte Ingles, high street favourites and exclusive boutiques, as well as small traditional shops selling crafts and independent fashion outlets by local designers– just make sure you save space in your suitcase!
There are many group guided tours and activities that single travellers can join to make new friends while exploring the city. The Silk Tour, for example, delves into the historic importance of Valencia in the international silk trade visiting La Lonja (Silk Exchange building) and the new Silk Museum… maybe including a stop at the shop to buy a beautiful silk scarf. Or, if you like cooking, join a paella masterclass to learn how to prepare Valencia’s most famous dish.
Cycling tours are another option, and because of the city’s flat layout, it is something that anybody can enjoy. Take a bike tour to the peaceful Albufera natural park, just south of the city, or explore the huerta (market garden) to learn about typical products like the chufas (tiger nuts) used to make horchata, a refreshing drink you must try while in Valencia.
Local products are often used in beauty treatments at many spas in the city. Try the orange massage at the Hospes Palau de la Mar or the Orange Blossom and Citrus Fruits Cocktail massages at the Caroli Health spa at the Westin Valencia hotel, for example.
Feeling refreshed, get ready for a delicious meal at a Michelin starred restaurant or one of the many tapas bars, before hitting the bars and dancing the night away.
