What Makes Sarojini Nagar So Popular Among Delhi's Young Women?

Women in Delhi are smitten by shopping. And why not? This cosmopolitan city has the most beautiful markets. It doesn't really matter if you are lanky or stout. Some serious scrounging required from your side and you will find everything- from clothes to accessories. Located in South West Delhi, one such popular market thriving since ages is Sarojini Nagar or the SN Market. 

This shopping hub has made it easier for Delhi women to keep their wardrobe updated without burning a hole in their pockets. Garima Verma, who is pursuing her Masters in Economics from Delhi University, shares how numerous social media apps compel young women to visit the market more often.

She further adds that it is like the Diagon Alley for college girls who love shopping but have a serious cash crunch or stay perennially broke.

Besides selling a lot of trendy stuff, the market is also known for the extent to which one can haggle unabashedly with the shopkeepers.

"I remember paying Rs 80 for a pair of goggles for which I was asked to give Rs 500. I still count it among one of my greatest achievements.", says Foreign language student Ayushi Jain.

She also mentioned that Sarojini Nagar has a big role to play in helping her survive through her college years. "You can't afford to not look good during those years. And Sarojini gives you the freedom to experiment."

There was, however, a time when there were rumours about Sarojini Nagar shutting down. Recalling those times, Nikita Kumar, a shopaholic says,"The news had sent everyone in a tizzy because there is absolutely no substitute to this place. No other place could have provided clothes at such nominal prices."

Nikita shares that she has bought gifts, footwear and clothing from SN which were both fashionable and durable. "It has helped me learn the art of bargaining and saving. Today, when brand obsession and prices are reaching new heights, Sarojini Nagar is a blessing in disguise," she confesses.
