What do young women think of spending their parents' money?

The desire of always having the latest gadgets, clothes from the most popular brands and owning the most hot-selling accessories is the newest ambition of the youth. The source of the money is not their concern, but the building is brought down if the magic card (credit card) does not work. It’s a sense of pride while buying the most fashionable dress with your ‘own’ but it is so embarrassing to buy groceries using the same ‘own’ money. But till when will we be dependent on our parents for everything?

Young women nowadays are trying to find jobs at an early age, juggling between studies and work to earn extra bucks. This is because they want to become financially independent and use their adulthood in the best way possible. If some are unable to work, they have asked their parents to give them a stipulated amount for the month that will be used by them for all purposes.

Sunita Aggarwal, a mother, adheres to the rule that her daughter must spend within their budget and they should save if they wish to buy something that is beyond their pocket money. By setting a limitation like this, children are trained to manage their funds once they start earning again.

A 23-year-old girl, who wished to stay anonymous, said that ‘after a certain age, you feel embarrassed to ask your parents every time you wish to buy something. By having a pocket money, you are independent but with its own boundaries.’  Women like her believe that at the end of the day it’s their parents’ hard-earned money and that they don’t have any right to exhaust it just to satisfy their whims and fancies- that change like the weather. They feel a sense of pride in owning things they have bought with their own money and thus value it more.

Nonetheless, there are others too who believe that it is okay to ask for money from their parents despite any age. They think that as parents it is their duty to provide them with resources till they are capable enough to earn themselves. They use their young age as a justification for not earning which is backed by their parents too.

Mr Anand Singhla, a father of two daughters, said “my girls feel restrained when a budget is imposed on them; by not doing so they are getting the freedom to choose which is in turn teaching them to be responsible.”

Yet, there is a majority of women who feel that asking money from their parents is acceptable only if the expenditure is too high. The decision of asking money from one’s parents is a personal one, but the dependence on the same for personal pampering is against the same independence most women are striving for.
