A new short film that was released this week called ‘Start with the boys,’ has gone viral on the internet. Starring Madhuri Dixit and directed by Bollywood filmmaker Vinil Mathew, the film is part of the #VogueEmpower month-long social awareness campaign by Vogue India.
In an effort to raise national awareness about women’s empowerment and how we need both men and women to stand up for the issue, the film shows young boys, babies and men being told that boys don’t cry. In the film, the frustration from holding back his emotions makes a man direct his rage towards his partner. The film ends with Dixit saying that instead of teaching men ‘Boys don’t cry’; we should teach them ‘not to make girls cry.’
Alex Kuruvilla, the managing director of Conde Nast India, told Al Arabiya News that the short film was inspired by actress Susan Sarandon’s comments during the Goa Film Festival, where she suggested that to bring a change, we must start with boys.
He added, “The idea of the film is centered around the fundamental truth that women’s empowerment is not about women alone, which is why I pledged to create a short film that communicates clearly the need to change the mindset of boys before they become men.”
As a part of the month long initiative, an article in the magazine states: “When we teach young boys at an early age to not do something ‘like a girl’ – the distinction that what a girl does is insignificant is imprinted in the young boy’s mind. Growing up, when these boys don’t see eye to eye with their partners they feel the need to enforce their views through aggression.”
