Known for playing Mullai in the hit serial Pandian Stores, a Tamil language drama, actress VJ Chitra reportedly died by suicide in a Chennai hotel on December 9. She was 29 years old. The young actress, who was reportedly shooting at EVP film city till late night on Wednesday, was found dead in the hotel room she was staying with her husband Hemanth, a businessman . Her father, a retired cop, has now filed a police complaint with the Nazarathpet Police station asking for a probe into her death.
According to a news report by The News Minute, Chitra’s family members have alleged foul play in her death. The police are currently questioning her husband Hemnath and the hotel employees who helped him open the door when her body was found. The investigation underway.
Reports say Chitra got engaged to Hemanth in August and the couple was set to marry in January. However, they reportedly had a registered marriage two months ago. Cybercrime department is currently going through the deceased actor's phone records. According to multiple reports, VJ Chitra had been dealing with depression. Her last social media post was from late Tuesday night, in which she had shared a picture of herself from a photoshoot.
In his earlier statement, Hemnath told police that Chitra had returned to her hotel room at around 2:30 am on Wednesday. He said that she went for a bath soon after returning from the shoot. However, seeing that she didn’t come out for a long time, Hemanth started knocking at the door. When she did not respond, he called the hotel staff who used a duplicate key to open the door and reportedly found the actor hanging from a ceiling fan.
As the investigation is still on, police also suspect financial issues being the reason behind her suicide, NDTV reported. A senior police officer said, "She had registered her marriage only recently. We suspect finance issues. We have not recovered any suicide note. The post-mortem is over."
On the work front, Chitra had featured in serials like Saravanan Meenatchi, Velunachi, Darling Darling, Mannan Magal and Chinna Papa Periya Papa, to name a few. She also took part as a contestant on the danceshow Jodi Fun Unlimited.
