A vice president at Columbia University has been charged following accusations of allegedly sexually assaulting an 11-year-old girl at his home. 56-year-old Marcelo Velez was arrested by police on Monday and was charged with aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault by contact, and endangering the welfare of a child.

According to a report by New York Post, the alleged incident took place at around 8:30 am on January 2 inside the guest room of his house in Woodcliff, New Jersey. After the assault, Velez reportedly went to play golf. According to a statement released by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, Woodcliff Lake cops were tipped off about the incident on Sunday, January 3. Velez was arrested following an investigation by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office’s Special Victims Unit. The relation between him and the minor survivor is not known as of yet.

Velez is the vice president of Manhattanville Development at Columbia University and has worked with the University since 1995. A Columbia University spokesperson told CNN, "We have placed Mr Velez on administrative leave and will cooperate fully with law enforcement officials investigating this matter.” Velez is currently being held in Bergen County Jail awaiting his court appearance, which has not yet been scheduled.
