Minister for Urban Development Venkaiah Naidu has come up with a unique woman empowerment strategy. Speaking at the Women Economic Forum, he announced that under the 'Housing for All' scheme, all homes would be registered in the names of women rather than men.
“Women empowerment is possible only when there is financial empowerment, legislative empowerment and women having the property rights. That’s why in our 'Housing for All' scheme the houses that are constructed will be in the name of women rather than men," Naidu said, as reported by Firstpost.
He also brought notice to the changing dynamics of the Indian society and the evolving role of women in it especially in the socio-political and economic context. “As far as our own civilization is concerned, a woman is highly respected. Mother and Sister invoke the highest of human sentiments and feelings...Our government draws motivation from the age old ways of according woman their due in that sense," he said citing names of several women ministers in the present NDA government.
Housing for All is an initiative taken by the NDA government. Also known as Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojna, it aims at constructing affordable houses in 2508 cities of the 26 states of the country. The scheme was put into action last month and aims to give housing facilities mainly to urban poor, economically weaker sections and low income groups.
A good idea, no doubt. However, how receptive the menfolk of families would be to such a step is a question that begs an answer.
