Veda Krishnamurthy's Sister Succumbs To COVID-19

Indian cricketer Veda Krishnamurthy lost her sister, Vatsala Shivakumar to COVID-19 on Wednesday night.

She was being treated at a private hospital in Chikkamagaluru. Her death comes just two weeks after her mother, Cheluvamba Devi died due to COVID-19. The information regarding Vatsala's death was announced by Veda's previous coach Irfan Sait. He posted a story about her demise on Instagram.

On April 24, Veda Krishnamurthy had made an announcement about her mother's death on her official Twitter handle. She had also informed that her sister was fighting against COVID-19 complications.

All this while, the cricketer had been busy helping others through social media, by amplifying their requests for help.

The death of Veda's sister has come at a time when India is struggling against the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. On Thursday, India recorded about 4,12,262 new COVID-19 cases and 3,980 deaths. This has raised the country's COVID-19 tally to 2,10,77,410.

IPL suspended due to increasing COVID-19 cases

Owing to the worsening situation, the Indian Premier League (IPL) was suspended by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). This happened after several cricketers tested positive for COVID-19.

Reports now state that the remaining IPL matches might be held in England. Sourav Ganguly, the president of the BCCI said that they would face a loss of Rs 2,500 crore if the IPL is completely cancelled. "We have to speak to other boards and see if a window can be made available before the T20 World Cup... Lot of things are involved and we will slowly start working on them. When we started the tournament in Dubai, there were close to 700 cases in the UAE which increased by a few hundred in the later stages," he said.
