The Kolkata Municipal Corporation, earlier this month, identified an urban primary health centre nearby to start the vaccination drive for sex workers in the 18-45 age bracket.
According to a report by the Times of India, there has not been any record of any of the Sonagachi sex workers testing positive this year.
Shashi Panja, Minister for Women and Child Development and Social Welfare, said, “Sex workers have been included on the superspreaders’ list, we have collected the data and the vaccination will start once the KMC is ready".
Meanwhile, the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine is in the final stages of getting approval from the Indian government. Once approved, the pharma giant will supply one billion doses to India within this year, according to a report.
It was earlier reported that the Centre may grant indemnity to the vaccine makers to hasten the process of approval of the vaccines. This will protect makers from legal proceedings, which means that they can’t be sued in the country.
More About COVID-19 Vaccine And Women
On June 25, Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) Director-General Dr Balram Bhargava said that COVID-19 vaccines should be given to pregnant women as it is useful for them. Previously, the Indian Government refrained from providing COVID vaccines to pregnant women.
The government guidelines laid out that only lactating women are recommended to take the vaccine against COVID-19 and further said that the government shortly will release guidelines for vaccinating pregnant women.
A study revealed that pregnant and post-partum women suffered more in the second wave of COVID-19 compared to the first.
