In a shocking tragedy reported from Kushinagar in Uttar Pradesh, 13 people died after falling into a well at a wedding Wednesday night. The casualties are all women and girls, and include a year-old infant as well.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, taking cognisance of the incident, condoled the deaths, tweeting, “The accident in Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh is heart-wrenching. I express my deepest condolences to the families of those who have lost their lives in this. With this, I wish the injured a speedy recovery. The local administration is involved in all possible help.”
Things To Know About Kushinagar Wedding Deaths:
1. As per reports, the group was sitting on a slab atop a well in the town of Nebua Naurangia where the wedding event was taking place. Unable to take the weight, the slab broke and the people on it fell.
2. The number of deaths was initially 11 but climbed to 13 when those injured could not be saved, though they were rushed to hospital. Tragic visuals from the hospital have emerged, showing family and relatives of the deceased mourning in their wedding attire.

3. UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also sent his condolences while his office said they had called for prompt relief operations at the site. District authorities said an ex-gratia of four lakh rupees will be given to the kin of the deceased.
4. According to Indian Express, the families were celebrating a 'haldi' ceremony on February 16 when the accident happened. The women were reportedly near the well for a ritual called 'matkodva.' When they fell inside, others present at the wedding heard their screams and rushed to rescue them.
5. Distressing visuals of the accident site are surfacing on social media, showing the state of the old, deep well.
