A US woman, Cherish Nortje was duped by a father-son jeweller duo in Jaipur. The woman ended up purchasing jewellery of Rs 300 for a massive Rs 6 crore. The complaint was filed by Nortje on May 18th where she reported that the jewels she bought from Jaipur's shop turned out to be fake. The incident came to light when Nortje had gone to an exhibition in the US and her jewellery was assessed as fake jewellery. She then travelled back to India and confronted the jewellers.
Details Of The Incident
Soon after the police complaint, the shop owners (Soni's Gems Shop) were recognised as Rajendra Soni and Gaurav Soni, a father-son duo. All three of them arrived at the police station to resolve the issue but interrogation turned into a heated argument. The father-son duo claimed that Nortje forcefully took the jewellery from the shop. Nortje claimed that her jewellery was fake and many other assets along with it were fake too. She then continued to demand a full repayment of her money's worth of real jewellery and gems. The role of CCTV footage too came to light which showed Soni leaving the shop.
After another heedless meeting between them, the police had reported that Rajendra and Gaurav Soni had gone missing and were possibly trying to flee the inquiry set between them. This happened after May 18th when Nortje filed a case. Under Indian law, a complaint had been filed in section 420 (fraud) of the Indian Penal Code for the father-son duo.
Not only this, the police later on found another accomplice in this fraudulent case, that of Nand Kishore. The person who attempted to forge fake certificates for the jewellery given to Nortje. Nand Kishore was arrested on May 19th and he claimed that he was told to do this on the instructions of the Sonis. The Police have mentioned that a full investigation is being carried on and the search for Rajendra and Gaurav Soni, the father-son duo is underway.
