United States of America has always been portrayed as the ‘place to be’ in popular culture. This year’s Global Gender Gap report however, tells a different story. The country ranked 20th on the list, behind countries that included: Nicaragua, Rwanda, Philippines and Belgium.
Where in Economic Participation and Opportunity US’s overall rank is #4, under Wage equality for similar work, it ranked 65. The country has seen many protests in the matter and equal wage for women is one of the most talked about workplace issues today. According to the report, the country ranked #1 in Professional and technical workers, under the same category.
Under Educational Attainment, US ranked #1 in Enrolment in secondary education, Literacy Rate and Enrolment in tertiary education. However, under Enrolment in primary education, the country ranked #77 which bought down the overall ranking under the category to 39.
US again ranked #1 at Sex-ratio at birth but the country’s Healthy life expectancy was reported to be #62. Under political empowerment, where it ranked 54; even though the country’s rank wasn’t the worst compared to other categories, the individual scores in all the sub-categories turned out to be collectively low.
