World number one Serena Williams defeated Simona Halep on Wednesday 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, entering the US Open semi-finals. Earlier in the week she had won her 308th Grand Slam victory to ease into quarter-finals.
Williams, who is aiming to clinch her seventh US Open title and 23rd Grand Slam crown, fired 18 aces en route to the triumph. Though she did make 43 unforced errors which Halep took advantage of by firing from all cylinders from the baseline. The Romanian became the first player in the tournament to break Williams's serve, and the first to take a set off the top seed. But soon Williams backfired and took a control, emerged victorious.

"I'm glad I got tested," said Williams to TOI, who saw seven break point opportunities go by in the second game of the second set.

The semi-finals will be held on Thursday where Williams will face off the first-time Grand Slam semi-finalist Karolina Pliskova for a place in Saturday's championship match.
