Pelosi's move

The strategy, laid out in a letter to representatives on Sunday night by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, came as Washington struggles to determine what to do with Trump in the 10 days before elected Democratic President Joe Biden is sworn in on January 20.

According to a House Democrat, authorities have launched at least 25 domestic terrorism probes into Wednesday's attack on the US Capitol, a senior military officer told lawmakers. After a fiery speech condemning the November 3 election outcome by the Republican president, five persons died in the rampage through the seat of government of Trump's supporters.

Trump's actions

Trump, who questioned the legitimacy of Biden's election win without proof, celebrated and egged on supporters until they lay siege to the Capitol, where lawmakers certified Biden's vote in the Electoral College.

The five dead reportedly include one Capitol Police officer attempting to fend off the crowds. Another police officer participating in the defending of the building died in the days after the assault while off duty, authorities said.

Pelosi's letter

"In protecting our Constitution and our Democracy, we will act with urgency, because this President represents an imminent threat to both," Pelosi said in the letter.

"As the days go by, the horror of the ongoing assault on our democracy perpetrated by this President is intensified and so is the immediate need for action," she wrote.

If Vice-President Pence would not respond and invoke the 25th Amendment, Democrats will proceed for a groundbreaking move to impeach the president.
