Saffron-Clad Hatemonger, Who Threatened Muslim Women With Rape, Finally Arrested

UP priest, Bajrang Muni, arrested after 11 days of making a threatening speech about raping Muslim women during a religious procession. The priest, named Bajrang Muni Das passed rape threats in front of a large crowd and police officials as well.

The priest from Uttar Pradesh recently made dangerous comments about Muslim women while he was attending a religious procession. In the presence of a large crowd and police officials, he was seen threatening to rape Muslim women.

The video of the mahant went viral on social media and received flak from many quarters. Since then, the demands to take him into custody are being put up in front of the administration which was finally accepted on April 13, 2022.

UP Priest Arrested For Threatening Muslim Women With Rape

Bajrang Muni Das is the head priest of Maharshi Shri Lakshman Das Udasin Ashram situated in Khairabad, Sitapur in Uttar Pradesh. On April 2, a video of the priest went viral on social media where he was seen threatening Muslim women with rape during a religious procession in Sitapur. The two minute long video sparked outrage among the public and also the National Commission For Women, demanding his immediate arrest.

11 days later, on April 13, the priest was arrested and was reportedly charged with sections of Indian Penal Codes for his hate speech during the procession and for making derogatory comments. The police had already filed First Information Report against him and he was taken onto custody later. Few hours after the registering of case, another video of Bajrang Muni Das was put up on social media where he was seen apologising for his statement and saying, "My statement has been presented in a wrong way. I seek unconditional apology for the same,".

The priest's statement is an example of the deep roots of communalism and the degrading ideas regarding women that prevail in the society. The delay in the arrest of the priest was called out from different quarters of the country.
