Uttar Pradesh's rising cases of rape are not just alarming but also show the crooked system which puts the survivors at crossroads, so much so that it leaves them with no hope. A recent case involving the rape of a minor showcases just that.
Recently, a 17-year-old Dalit girl from Uttar Pradesh's Barabanki district died by suicide after police reportedly pushed her family to make a deal in a rape complaint they had filed against a neighbour, who they also said had threatened her.
The accused, who is also a member of the Dalit community, was wounded in the leg by police late on Thursday after he opened fire at them while being brought to retrieve a gun he had buried nearby, according to authorities. Sub-inspector Yogendra Singh, the case's investigation officer, has been suspended for suspected negligence while a departmental investigation is being carried out.
