Unnao Rape Case: A Delhi court directed the rape survivor to go out only when necessary until the last deposition of her case is over. The survivor was asked by the court to notify personal security officers before stepping out.
As per the court orders, the survivor and her family are to communicate with Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) Assistant Commandant for proper security if they wish to go outside Delhi. They are also supposed to inform about the meetings with their lawyers one day before.
District and Sessions Judge Dharmesh Sharma's ruling came during the hearing of a plea filed by the survivor. She alleged that personal security officers deployed to protect her and her family members have been harassing them. She claimed that she was not allowed to enjoy her liberties. The court said that survivor has to plan her outings in such a way that she does not have to go out every day. The issue between the survivor's family and the personal security officers is to be resolved amicably, the court directed.
In 2017, when the survivor was 17-years-old, she was abducted and raped by former legislator Kuldeep Singh Sengar. Sengar was convicted in the case and was sentenced to life imprisonment by the trial court. He had later challenged the verdict and punishment in the High Court.
The case was transferred from Unnao to Delhi after the Supreme Court directions came in. Sengar was also convicted for killing the survivor's father. The Supreme Court had ruled in 2019 that the survivor and her family be given personal security.
The rape case got national attention in April 2018 when the harrowing events came to light. The convict with the help of other individuals had framed the survivor's father as a perpetrator. He was then killed in judicial custody.
