Kramatorsk, a city under Ukrainian control but situated close to Russian-occupied regions, became the target of the missile attack that claimed the lives of thirteen people, including Victoria Amelina. The writer, known for her invaluable work as a war crimes researcher and novelist, was dining at the Ria Lounge with a group of Colombian journalists and writers when the tragedy struck.

The incident left at least 60 others injured, underscoring the devastating impact of the missile strike on innocent civilians. Despite the valiant efforts of medical professionals who fought to save Amelina’s life, the severity of her injuries proved insurmountable, leading to her untimely demise, according to PEN Ukraine, a writers' association.

In a sorrowful statement, the group expressed, "It is with great pain that we inform you that the heart of the writer Victoria Amelina stopped beating on 1 July. In the last days of Victoria's life, her family and friends were by her side." The loss of Victoria Amelina reverberated deeply among her loved ones and the literary community, mourning the departure of a passionate advocate for justice and human rights.

Who was Victoria Amelina?

Amelina had dedicated herself to fervently documenting alleged war crimes since the Russian invasion in 2022. Not only was she fearlessly shining a light on the atrocities committed, but she had also embarked on a mission to work with children near the conflict's frontlines, striving to protect and support those most vulnerable to the ravages of war.

With an upcoming publication on the horizon, Amelina's non-fiction book in English, titled 'War And Justice Diary: Looking At Women Looking At War,' promised to shed further light on the grim reality she tirelessly confronted. Through her writings, she aimed to expose the harsh truths of war crimes, unearthing the hidden stories and providing a voice for the voiceless.

A poignant post on her Twitter account captured Victoria Amelina in a moment of resolute determination, as she photographed a decimated building in Ukraine. Alongside the image, she introduced herself as "a Ukrainian writer. I have portraits of great Ukrainian poets in my bag. I look like I should be taking pictures of books, art, and my little son. But I document Russia's war crimes and listen to the sound of shelling, not poems. Why?"

The death of Victoria Amelina has not only sent shockwaves through the literary and human rights communities but has also renewed calls for accountability and justice in the face of ongoing conflict. Human rights activists are calling on international bodies to investigate the attack and hold those responsible for war crimes accountable, in the hope of preventing further loss of innocent lives.
