Woman Cab Driver Attacked With Stones In North Delhi

An Uber driver was allegedly stoned by an unidentified person early on Monday while she was operating her cab near Kashmere Gate in North Delhi. Around 2 am, the driver, who has been identified as Priyanka Devi, was on duty when a man attacked her car with stones and then attempted to steal her phone.

Devi managed to flee the attack, according to the police, and only suffered minor chest injuries. After receiving initial treatment, she was released from the hospital.

DCP (North), Sagar Singh Kalsi, stated, "We received a call about an attempted robbery by breaking the glass of a car around 2 a.m. A female cab driver named Priyanka, who lives in Samaypur Badli, was found by police officers who had rushed to the scene." She claimed that someone tried to steal her phone and broke the glass in her taxi. After she retrieved her phone, the attacker left the area.

"She later declined to file a complaint. We reached out to her, but she declined to file a complaint. However, we made a DD entry after taking suo moto cognizance of the problem. According to the entry, a case has been filed under the attempted robbery sections," the DCP continued. According to the police, the accused has been found and the case is being looked into.

A spokesperson from Uber shared in a statement, "What this driver went through is horrifying. We are in touch with the driver and wish her a speedy and full recovery. Her injury-related medical expenses will be covered under Uber’s on-trip insurance provided through a third-party insurance partner. We stand ready to support law enforcement authorities in their investigation.”

Another shocking incident occurred in the country when a man ran after a female autorickshaw driver in Pune and demanded sex from her. The accused, 30-year-old Nikhil Ashok Memzade, a resident of Hadapsar in Pune, was detained after the woman reported him to the local police. He was charged by the police with violating sections 354 and 354A of the Indian Penal Code.

In another instance of harassment, a girl was forced to kiss a food delivery agent in Pune a few months ago. The 40-year-old accused was detained by the police in September after molesting a teenage girl while delivering food to her home in the Yewalewadi neighbourhood.
