Continuing their good run at the Uber Cup, the Indian women's team has booked a semi final berth in the tournament, after defeating Thailand 3-1. Moreover, following the win, India is assured of bringing home at least a bronze medal. This is what an excited Ashwini Ponappa tweeted following the team's accomplishment:
The day for India didn’t start well with top shuttler Saina Nehwal losing the first singles match to World No. 2 and 2013 World Champion Ratchanok Intanon 21-12, 21-19, giving Thailand a 1-0 lead. However World No. 10 PV Sindhu stepped up to the challenge, beating Busanan Ongbumrungphan in the second match comfortably at 21-18, 21-7, equalling the score.
It was time then for the efficient doubles pair, the 2010 Commonwealth Games champions, Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa to step on the gas, and they didn't disappoint, deefating Puttita Supajirakul and Sapsiree Taerattanachai 21-19,21-12 in a 39-minute clash to make it 2-1 in India's favour.
All eyes then were on young shuttler Ruthvika Shivani, who rose to the occasion in style, sealing a 21-18, 21-16 win over World No. 25 Nitchaon in a 41-minute third singles which led to India's victory.
