Two women, who are also sisters, filed an FIR against in-laws in Kolhapur accusing them of physical and mental torture over a 'failed virginity test'.
According to reports, one of the sisters was made to pass a virginity test after the wedding. After she didn't pass the test as her in-laws wanted, her husband unofficially annulled the marriage. She also alleged that the family threatened to kill her and the husband gave her rape threats. In an interview with the Times of India, one of the women spoke about her experience at her in-laws' house.
She said alleged that her husband tried to hang her by the ceiling. "I got married on November 27 with Sandip Kanjarbhat. My mother-in-law Shobha Sunny Khanjarbhat tortured me two days after the wedding. My husband tried to hang me by the ceiling."
She also accused her mother-in-law of physical abuse as she claimed that she hit her in the faces and used to pinch her. The torture started after the woman failed a 'virginity test' orchestrated by her in-laws. She said, "they asked us
She added that her character was judged badly after the white sheet didn't show any bloodstains. "I didn't bleed so they alleged that I wasn't a good character," she said.
She further alleged, "My husband used to threaten me that he will ask someone to rape me in Belgaum." The husband also allegedly told her to "go home or die by suicide" if she had any self-pride left. He also told her that he and his family will force her to commit suicide, the woman claimed.
She accused that her mother-in-law of threatening to remarry her son, "Mother-in-law used to say there are other women ready to marry her son and heavy dowry such as gold ornaments and four-wheelers."
According to the FIR, the woman was misled later and was left at her mother's house. "They misled me to come to my mother's house for a ceremony and left me there," she said.
The matter was then taken to caste panchayat. It is where the in-laws called off the wedding and the husband was allowed to remarry by the orders of caste panchayat.
The FIR was lodged against the Kanjarbhat family on April 8, the case is under investigation.
