Bihar: Two Married Women Elope To Marry; Forcibly Returned To Husbands

A wrong number flared a romantic relationship between two married women in Bihar. The duo eloped, leaving their families, to marry each other. However, now both women have been forced to come back to their respective husbands.

The women, Soni Kumari and Komal Kumari came into contact with the wrong number. The duo started having deep conversations that turned into a romantic relationship. The duo wanted to marry each other and eloped. 

Details of the two women

The duo were in contact for seven years. Soni belongs to the Chhapra district and got married to a man in Patna in 2020. Komal, on the other hand, is from Lakkhapur village in Jamui district. She also got married in 2020 and has two children

Their families had sensed their relationship earlier. Komal was asked to stay away from Soni. To meet Soni, Komal even convinced her family to shift to the city for work. But her family denied it. 

The plan to elope and get married

Consequently, Komal contacted Soni one day and they decided to elope and marry each other. Soni played the role of husband in the relationship, while Komal was the wife. The duo Eloped in 2023.

Komal's family became aware of the union and reported it to the police. The woman was forcefully brought back to their families by the police. Mahila Police Station forced the women to return to their families. The two women expressed their deep love and relationship with others, but they couldn't convince the police.

In 2017, two women in Bengaluru married each other. One woman was 25 years old and the other was 21. The older woman proposed to the younger one and they got married. The duo started living together as a couple in a flat in Koramangala. When the parents of the younger woman found her missing, they filed a complaint with the police. 

Consequently, the lesbian couple were traced, and their marriage was termed illegal. Reportedly, the women were distant cousins. 

Same-sex marriage petition in India 

Recently Supreme Court heard the review petition of its judgment on same-sex marriage. The court had previously refused to recognise same-sex marriage. However, it also added that the Union must bring legislation about same-sex marriage. The Union also proposed to form a committee to discuss the same-sex marriage law.
