Women are surpassing boundaries of what they can do. Recently, two women from Gaza set out to do something creatively progressive from the war remains in the area. Majd Mashharawi and Rawan Abddllaht set out to make bricks out of the rubble that had remained from all the bombing in the place. These bricks can now be used to rebuild homes for those who lost their houses earlier.
Gaza has seen tough times in the past because of its constant tension with Israel. Israel has also made it difficult for Gaza to import construction material from outside, which has posed a challenge in the resurrection of the strip.
“…9,061 Palestine refugee houses have been considered totally destroyed and 5,066 have suffered severe, 4,085 major and 120,333 minor damages. Also, to date, the agency has only received funding to reconstruct 200 of the 9,061 houses totally destroyed,” reported a UNRWA 2015 research.

With the building work on, Gaza needs at least 40,000 bricks everyday and these women are responsible for the making of the new-styled bricks called “Green Cakes”. Majd and Rawan had dreamt of it during their university days itself when they were studying engineering. However, they were not satisfied with the material that was already being used in Gaza for its flimsiness to build proper, long-standing construction.
Now, the Green Cakes are made with recycled ashes and the weight of the block is half of that of a normal brick and are priced 30% lesser, which makes it a potent idea which could succeed in the current times in Gaza. The women expect that about 18,000 houses in the area need rebuilding, which makes their product a sure-shot hit.
