Working mothers often have to make major changes to accommodate their children’s schedules into their working hours- this way many women let their careers take a back seat. A few others, however, just keep going up the ladder. One such woman is Smitha Deepak- a talk-show host, an entrepreneur, a model and brand ambassador for Northern California Cricket Association and a mother of two children.
Deepak started her first venture at the age of sixteen- an art school which grew to have a hundred students. In 2002, she moved to USA and continued to make her mark in the entrepreneurial world. She is the CEO and Founder of a children’s organic clothing brand, The Green Creation, Inc. In an interview with The way women work, she said that, according to her, Indian women are natural multitaskers and have been doing it for generations , that she feels is the key to her success.
Deepak emphasizes on the role of mentors. She believes her mentors have played a huge part in her success. Ask her about the obstacles she has faced and she doesn’t complain. She believes in finding solutions to the obstacles instead of worrying too much about them. She told The way women work, that instead of finding babysitters for her children, she makes sure they are involved in whatever she does during the day. That way, she believes, she gets to spend quality time with them and her children get to learn about what she does.
She feels that women who wish to succeed should know where there interests lie, and get thoroughly educated in that industry. She adds, “Never compare yourself to others, men or women… (learn) to express who you are at your core, whether you are shy and soft-spoken or loud and assertive, without trying to fit a certain mold implied by your being a female.”
