The US Permanent Representative to the UN, Nikki Haley has said that President Trump may get involved in the peace process between India and Pakistan because the US is concerned about the state of India-Pak relations.
"This administration is concerned about the relationship between India and Pakistan and very much wants to see how we de-escalate any sort of conflict going forward," Haley said.
She also said that she "wouldn’t be surprised" if the President participates as well.
India has so far refused to let a third party get involved in its bilateral relations with Pakistan.
"We very much think that we should be proactive in the way that we are seeing tensions rise and conflicts start to bubble up and so we want to see if we can be a part of that,” Haley said at a news conference.
She said that the US wouldn’t want to wait "till something happens".
In response, India’s external affairs spokesperson Gopal Baglay said that India would not allow third party mediation, and that “the government's position for bilateral redressal of all India-Pakistan issues in an environment free of terror and violence hasn't changed”.
President Barack Obama’s administration had maintained that the US would not have a role to play in the disputes between India and Pakistan.
