The Trump administration has said that it will not be discontinuing Michelle Obama’s Let Girls Learn Program, which she started in 2015 to increase education for girls in developing countries.
However, CNN had reported that the program would cease operations immediately according to an internal document they had acquired.
"Moving forward, we will not continue to use the 'Let Girls Learn' brand or maintain a stand-alone program," read the memo sent to Peace Corps employees this week by the agency's acting director Sheila Crowley.
Within hours after the news of the memo broke, United States Agency for International Development (USAID) spokesperson said that the program will not be discontinued and that the email was sent because of internal confusion.
The USAID has said that there will be no changes to the Let Girls Learn program
The White House and the USAID have not indicated how long the program will continue nor did they answer why the original memo was sent out.
In the two years since the program was launched, it has invested $1 billion in programming in 50 different countries.
After announcing that the program would be discontinued, Crowley had said in her memo that her agency was proud of what it accomplished. She wrote,
“'Let Girls Learn' provided a platform to showcase Peace Corps' strength in community development, shining a bright light on the work of our Volunteers all over the world."
The news of the memo, which indicated Let Girls Learn would be discontinued came at the same time as the Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue’s announcement that the nutrition guidelines for school lunches would be rolled back.
Last week, news about Trump’s plans to eliminate funding for the Office of Global Women’s Issue by 2018 to make room for military spending came to light.
